Background:

The school was founded in 1892 and serves an inner city community with a mixture of traditional terraced houses, garden terraced flats and some new low-cost housing. Compared with the main national indicators, the school serves an area of significant social and economic deprivation: 42 per cent of pupils are eligible for free school meals. The school offers a 'broad and balanced' curriculum, based on the national curriculum. A daily breakfast club is offered, in addition to after school clubs three evenings a week. Community links are 'increasing and improving' - the links with the church are 'excellent' and the school uses the church to celebrate festivals as well as for national curriculum purposes. Pupils involve themselves with fund raising for both local and national charities. Handball is currently the only sport in which the school is 'successful', although football is becoming a 'major sporting interest'.
