Background:
St Catherine's was founded in 1929 but the main building dates from the 1930s with extensions added over the years. The school and a community centre are set around a playground and the school campus is surrounded on three sides by housing with the church on the fourth side. As well as the core subjects the school has a 'great tradition of excellence' in music and art. The school choir competes in several festivals, and came second in the Heath Mersey Festival in 1998. The school is proud of its 'excellent musicians'. Sporting activities are 'high on the agenda', with cross-country running, athletics, football, cricket, netball and rounders featuring in after school sessions. The school has 'close links' with the Catholic Children's Rescue Society and with the street children of Brazil, and raises money each year for them and other charities.
