Background:

Founded in 1901, the school serves Urmston, a commercial and shopping town which is primarily residential. Pupils attending the school come from a 'variety' of backgrounds. In addition to separater infant and junior department buildings, there are also school and dining halls. An on-site pre-school is managed privately by the parish, from which the school receives its main intake. 'Good working relationships' are fostered by the teamwork of long-term experienced staff committed to a 'quality' education. The school also emphasises extra-curricular activities, notably entering the book quiz and road safety project, and offering football, netball, rounders, swimming and cricket teams. It maintains 'strong' parish and parental links, and a 'large amount of valuable equipment' was provided for the school by the Friends of English Martyrs' School Association. The sacramental programme is considered an 'integral part of school life', involving the children in the church community. The school aims to provide a suitable place for Catholic children to be sent 'in conscience to be educated'.
