Background:

Didsbury is an average-sized school situated in an urban village in South Manchester, in the residential parish of St James and Emmanuel. The majority of pupils are drawn from the immediate area but several travel from further afield. It is popular and is over-subscribed nearly every year. The school has a 'long tradition' of education in the area, beginning in the 1600s, and some children are the fifth generation from their family to attend. The present school buildings date from 1878 and 1910, and are of architectural significance. The school grounds are 'very small' but over the last two years, a 'major' development has taken place on site. The parent body spent 'a great deal of effort' along with the pupils and community in achieving this overhaul. The buildings were also remodelled in 1990. Didsbury participates in 'various' sports and outdoor activities and has an active parent body. The school also works 'closely' with the local community and neighbouring schools. Pupils come from 'many faiths and social backgrounds', but the school aims to promote 'high achievement' for all in the 'context of a caring, Christian community'.
