Background:

Built in 1961 to serve a new housing estate, the school offers large classrooms with a central hall and is set in 'extensive, well-kept' grounds surrounded by mature trees. Its own nursery, situated half a mile from the main building, was established in 1994, and children attend on a full-time basis. In addition to the National Curriculum, the main school teaches personal, social and health education (PSHE), citizenship and European awareness. It has 'close links' with Schule am Heikenberg in Lunen, Germany and recently established links with a French school in Clerment-Ferrand. Extra-curricular activities include football, netball, racquet sports, drama, music, choir, french and information and information and communications technology (ICT). The SEN co-ordinator's role is largely to organises and administrates, and the school believes firmly that all children 'should be integrated onto their own peer group class as much as possible'. There is a 'thriving' parent teachers and friends association and pupils raise funds for the RNIB, Comic Relief and local charities. In 1999, BECTA asked the school to trial two interactive whiteboards and these are now integrated into the teaching in Years 4, 5 and 6. The school was awarded Beacon status in 1999.
