Background:
Founded in 1796 as a day/boarding school for girls. Although now serving a highly urbanised area of Manchester, the school still occupies its original site, with some of the early building s still in use. Over the past five years, some new buildings have been added: the Technology Building in 1995, the Humanities Building in 1996 and the Science Laboratories in 1997.
