Background:

Built in 1951 on site of old girls' grammar school; boys' and girls' school amalgamated on site in 1986. The school's location is easy to access from many parts of Greater Manchester and Cheshire, although it also attracts many pupils from outside Stretford and the borough of Trafford. Facilities include a new purpose-built block for technology, art and design, modern languages, and sixth-form common room. New science building and dining hall extension in 2004 because of rising numbers. School is set in 18 acres of playing fields with pitches and courts for hockey, rugby, soccer, cricket, netball, tennis and athletics. Specialist coaching is offered for golf, lacrosse, rugby, soccer and cricket, and the school has area, county and national representatives. Curriculum is broad and modern; sports studies and A-level technology. Music is outstanding; 15 per cent of pupils learn an instrument. It maintains strong links with industry, with sixth-form industry education, and won the Trafford prize for best preparation for work-experience. Particular connection with St Anne's Hospice. Specialist science college status. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place.
