Background:

Dedicated to St Ambrose Barlow, a local Martyr and Saint, the school was established in 1985 as a result of an amalgamation of the Hollies RC High School for Girls and St Marks RC High School for Boys. The school is situated on a pleasant site in Didsbury, a suburb of Manchester. The school has excellent facilities. These comprise seven science laboratories, three dining areas, a sports hall and new gym, a purpose-built drama hall, seven design technology rooms, two IT rooms, a library with CD ROM and internet facility, three art rooms and Year 11 common room (including table tennis and pool table). Every classroom has access to a recently installed high speed computer network. Each faculty in school enjoys suited accommodation in well-equipped classrooms and many corridors overlook attractive 'quadrangle' areas, which are available for use by the children. The school has a strong tradition of active involvement in working with charities at local, national and international level. It also has a wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer, both sporting (at team and individual level) and non-sporting (ranging from drama and music to skiing. The school was designated 'Science College status' in September 2004. The school ethos is Catholic, purposeful and well-ordered.
