Background:
The school moved to its current site in 1974 where it occupies 'small, clasp-built, open-plan' accommodation. It is surrounded by 'extensive' fields, a football pitch and a small wood, cultivated by pupils, and is currently over-subscribed. Since Newton Heath is a 'very deprived' area, the school works to 'regenerate the area through the widening of horizons for the children and an increase in opportunities for the parents'. In particular, through 'close links' with ex-pupils, the school has access to expertise in many areas. Children can take part in annual visits to Normandy and to activity centres, and they 'play a full part' in community activities as well as raising money for local charities. The school runs an over-subscribed playgroup and holds events and visits for senior citizens. 'We are building the citizens of tomorrow, not just cramming learning into children'.
