Background:
Opened in 1904, the school is housed in a two-storey red brick building which was used as a military hospital during the First World War. It overlooks the Irk valley from a hilltop on the site of Harpur Hall, three miles from the city centre, and is surrounded by a mixture of council, rented and owner-occupied housing. It is sited in a ward which experiences poverty and unemployment, but 'parents are very supportive and want the best for their children'. Facilities include an all-weather floodlit sports pitch used for after school activities. The school was involved in setting up the physical education guidelines for the national curriculum as well as being part of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority's good practice videos. Older children are taken out of the inner city environment on youth hostelling trips to the lakes. 'Many' visitors to the school give talks on issues such as drugs, bullying and citizenship, and domestic violence workshops were piloted for Year 5 students. The school is also involved with the Curriculum Crew run by the local police. Parents groups run fairs and other events. Red Nose Day, the NSPCC, the Salvation Army, Save the Children, UNICEF and Crisis Appeals are all supported by the school.
